Tourism in Ireland
Every year almost 6.5 million tourists visit Ireland. About half of them are from Britain. Most of the rest are from other European countries and North America. Many people come to enjoy the peace and beauty of the Irish countryside.
But the capital is also very popular, with about 4.5 million visitors per year. Dublin is an old city with a population of over 1 million. It has some fine medieval buildings, including two Gothic cathedrals. But it is mainly an 18th century city, with elegant streets and squares and beautiful public buildings in the Georgian style. In one way, Dublin is also a very young city. About 40% of Dubliners are under 25. There are many lively pubs, cafes and restaurants. And the busy night life attracts young people from all over Europe.
