The Aran Islands

The three Aran islands lie off the west coast of Ireland. People have lived there for thousands of years and there are a lot of historical monuments - and some of them are 4,000 years old.

One of the most spectacular, the fort of "Dún Aengus", was built around the time of Christ.

In the early Middle Ages, the Aran Islands were an important European religious centre and, today, visitors can see the ruins of many old churches. Visitors can also enjoy the Irish way of life, which is much more traditional  here than in most other parts of Ireland.

Nearly all of the 1,300 islanders can speak English, but they speak Irish, or Gaelic, as their first language .

Today the islanders live from fishing, farming and tourism - and the Aran pullover is also important for the local economy. This cream-coloured pullover dates from the early 20th century and has become world famous. The complex patterns on Aran pullovers tell stories about the good things - and the problems - of life.
