Trinity College has had many famous students. One of them was the writer Oscar Wilde.
Wilde was born into a rich Dublin family in 1854. Between 1871 and 1874 he studied at Trinity and then went on to Oxford University. Later he moved to London to begin his career as a writer. In the 1890s, he wrote many brilliant comedies for the theatre. And he also wrote "The picture of Dorian Gray", a tragic story about a man who gave up his soul to stay young for ever.
Wilde's personal life was also tragic. He got married in 1884 and had two sons. But he was really attracted to men. 19th century Britain did not tolerate homosexuality, and in 1895 he was sent to prison for two years. Afterwards, he moved to France. He died poor and lonely in a Paris hotel in 1900. He was only 46.
