Studying at British and Irish universities
In Britain and Ireland, students do not normally stay at university as long as many students in Germany. University courses last about three or four years - and students have to finish their course in that time.
They have a busy timetable, with lectures, seminars and essays, and there is often an examination at the end of each year. After their final examination, they get a degree - usually a B.A. or B.Sc. (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of science) - and they get their certificate at a special ceremony. Their parents usually come and they feel very proud when they see their children wearing caps and gowns.
But student life is not just hard work. Many students live at their universities or colleges, or in halls of residence. And most students spend a lot of their free time at their university. There are clubs for sports and other activities - acting, debating, cinema, photography, chess and so on. And there are normally bars where students can meet in the evenings. So universities are lively places from early morning till late at night.
